Russia’s aggressive invasion of Ukraine in Feb, 2022 is to be condemned in the strongest of terms. Thousands have died in the conflict and much of Ukraine has been destroyed.
Today many people in the west support US efforts to aid Ukraine in their efforts to defeat Russia. But surprisingly we are not seeing widespread concern over the consequences of nuclear war nor are we seeing widespread demonstrations against the war.
During the Cuban missile crisis in the 1960’s, people in the west were acutely aware of the dangers presented by nuclear war and the news media regularly warned of the possibility that nuclear weapons could be used. People were justifiably worried. However today many people seem to accept the Ukraine war as necessary and justified regardless of the consequences. We have heard it said that nuclear annihilation “is worth it”. This suggestion is shocking to say the least.
On Feb 22, 2023, Vladimir Putin warned that the current confrontation with the West represents “an existential threat to the survival of Russia and the Russian people”. He surmised that the US intent is to “break up Russia and control the Russian economy and it’s raw materials”. Regardless of the accuracy of Putin’s statements, this is his belief. Putin further stated that he will “defend Russia with any means necessary if the existence of the Russian State is threatened”. Putin’s threat is not an idle one!
There can be little doubt that Putin is serious about his intent to defend the motherland at all cost and yet the US shows little interest in pursuing a peaceful solution to the conflict. Surprisingly we see little effort by the public to oppose the war in Ukraine.
On Sunday Feb 18, 2023 there was a small peaceful anti war demonstration in Washington that received little to no coverage in the media. But that has been it so far. Where is the outrage among the public who should understand that nuclear war will eliminate most of us? Where are the anti war protests?
